Nature, outside play, and your child’s health
Updated: Feb 22, 2019
There are so many ways in which children learn. As they grow and develop from babies into toddlers into early childhood, their minds are so open to new experiences and to their development. In this time, children are exploring and testing their boundaries and are honing physical movements and speech. A key part of the way we help children to experience the world here at our Ascot childcare centre is with play-based learning. Specifically, we encourage children to play outside and to engage in tactile play where they can explore new activities in a safe and encouraging environment.
We are based in Ascot but welcome children to our early learning centre for families from Albion, Eagle Farm, Hamilton, Hendra and beyond. If you would like to come down and see our beautiful outside play area for yourself, please call us to arrange a time to come down with your child and meet us. We would love to show you around. Call us at 3268 2748 or get in touch with us online and we will call you back.
Outside play and your child’s development
In an increasingly technologically-driven world, connecting with the outdoors is all the more important. Often, due to the busy demands of parents and the ever-present workload, today’s children have increasingly limited opportunities to connect with their natural world. At Ascot childcare centre we ensure that outside play is an integral part of your child’s day with us. We have a beautiful outdoor area with water play, sand play and creek bed-like areas for your child to connect with their natural environment. When playing outside, your child will experience a range of developmental and health-related benefits that will serve them well as they grow and mature.
Enhance their cognitive skills through exposure to a natural setting
Improve their social relations through regular opportunities for unstructured outdoor play
Increase overall physical activity through running, jumping, and free expression
Reduce child’s stress levels through being around greenery and nature
A great deal of research has focused on the importance of green spaces for healthy child development. Outdoor play has been explored for its efficacy in child development in regard to hands-on activities, green space play, and outdoor play in general. It has been found that there are a range of benefits, from the cognitive, through to social and emotional development as well. Some of the most encouraging evidence links to the effectiveness of outdoor programmes to children’s self-esteem, autonomy, and sense of self.
At Ascot Childcare and Kindy, we place a great deal of emphasis on giving children free reign to play as they wish, interpreting the space around them in whatever way they choose to see it. As part of this, we provide a large and safe outdoor space for children to engage with, knowing the benefit and importance of outdoor play for healthy development.

We know that many of the children who are with us are here for eight to ten hours each day, which is why it is important for us to offer variation and exciting spaces for your child to explore. We have trees, plants, shrubs and bushes in our outdoor childcare area, which gives your child safe and ready access to a natural environment, with plenty of variation and difference throughout their day.
